Koranen som en gudomlig bok erbjuder en djupgående plan för att förstå kosmos och integrerar kosmiska fenomen med andlig insikt. Den presenteras inte som enbart en historisk eller vetenskaplig lärobok utan som en tidlös vägledning som innehåller djupa sanningar om existens, mänskligheten och det gudomliga, och pekar ofta på vetenskapliga realiteter långt innan de upptäcks. Dess syfte är att vägleda mänskligheten till både världslig och evig lycka.
- Koranen som universums tolk
Fethullah Gülens verk beskriver ofta Koranen som en "översättning", "tolkning" eller "identifierare" av "Universums bok". Denna uppfattning antyder att universum, med alla dess invecklade lagar och fenomen – från fysik och kemi till astronomi och biologi – är en storslagen bok skriven av Guds "kraft" och "vilja" [1, 2, 3]. The Qur'an as a divine book offers a profound blueprint for understanding the cosmos, integrating cosmic phenomena with spiritual insight. It is presented not as a mere historical or scientific textbook but as a timeless guide that contains profound truths about existence, humanity and the divine, often pointing to scientific realities long before they are discovered. It aims to guide humanity to both worldly and eternal happiness.
The Qur'an as the Interpreter of the Universe
Fethullah Gulen's works frequently describe the Qur'an as a "translation", "interpretation" or "identifier" of the "Book of the Universe". This view suggests that the universe, with all its intricate laws and phenomena – from physics and chemistry to astronomy and biology – is a grand book written by God's "power" and "will" [1, 2, 3]. Just as the creator of a machine knows best how it should function, God, the creator of the human "machine" and the universe, also knows how it should function optimally. The Qur'an sheds light on these divine processes and natural laws of nature and enables humanity to truly understand the great significance of the cosmos.
Through the Qur'an, the universe is transformed from a mere "disordered papers" into a book whose paragraphs, sentences and words can be read and enjoyed, so that the "eyes of the heart" are enlightened by its voice [3, 4, 5, 7]. It leads man from earthly limitations to the heaven and eternity and provides a methodology for understanding the world. Furthermore, it helps humanity to discover "hidden realities" in the soul of the universe [1]. Gulen emphasizes that understanding the Qur'an requires engaging with both the physical world and the spiritual insights it conveys. He also states that the Qur'an is a "light-diffusing book" that curbs pride and ego while inspiring enthusiasm and guiding humanity towards safety, trustworthiness, benevolence and justice
Scientific Foresight and Divine Hints
While the Qur'an is not explicitly a book of modern sciences such as physics, astronomy or medicine, it contains numerous subtle indications, principles and even "seeds" of knowledge that correspond with scientific advances in various fields. These references serve to encourage its followers to explore and understand these sciences, as many Qur'anic verses can only be fully grasped with such knowledge. Gulen asserts that religion and science not only can but must coexist and rejects the notion of conflict between them [8, 9]. He believes that natural and social sciences mutually nourish and complete religion.
Some examples of scientific foresight alluded to in the Qur'an include:
• Cosmic Phenomena: The Qur'an encourages observing the "stars, galaxies and systems" and recognises the expansion of the universe [10]. The vastness of the cosmos is presented as a testimony to divine truth. Gulen mentions the "Hubble constant" as a measure of galaxies moving away from each other, stating that for every million light-years, between two galaxies, they move away from each other at 20 km/second. If the distance increases by a thousandfold, their speed increases by a thousandfold. A galaxy that is 10 billion light years away is travelling at 200,000 km/second, which is two-thirds the speed of light, which indicates an expansion. He also notes that the universe was created by God's "Be!" (see Big Bang Theory) command and is estimated to be 13-14 billion years old.
• Biological and Human Sciences: The Qur'an draws attention to human organs and anatomical features and guides the journey of understanding from the beginning of existence to the "realm of particles". Fethullah Gulen quotes scientific figures to illustrate the improbability of random biological formation. He explains that a single protein composed of 40,000 atoms can only be formed by chance with an extreme probability of 1 in 10^60. He further states that a protein sequence requires a probability of 1 in 10^243 and that the human body, made of 60 trillion cells, functions through a delicate but perfect interaction. This detailed scientific improbability is presented as confirmation of divine creation.
• Technological Marvels as Foreshadowing: Prophetic miracles, which are often mentioned in religious texts, are seen by Gulen as foreshadowing future scientific and technological achievements. For example, the transportation of the throne of Queen Bilqis at the time of the prophet Solomon is interpreted as a miracle in relation to prophet Solomon, performed by someone with ilm-i ledün (divine knowledge), suggesting advancements beyond common understanding. Furthermore, the communication of ants in the story of the prophet Solomon is compared to "electromagnetic waves" that transmit "secret messages" with "coordinates", indicating modern communication methods. The term tekarub (drawing near) in a hadith is interpreted as a reference to the relativity of time and the shortening of distances, alluding to modern travelling speeds and astronomical phenomena. Gulen cites the Qur'anic verse "And He will create other things that you do not yet know" (Nahl, 16/8) as an encouragement for scientists to invent new means of transportation. He states that people at the time of the Prophet could only imagine sailing ships, while the Qur'an pointed to future motorised ships such as transatlantic vessels. He gave ideas to scientists and opened new horizons for those with talent.
• Disease and Treatment: Gulen emphasises that God, who sends diseases, has also provided the means for their treatment. The Qur'an encourages the search for cures for all diseases, including serious illnesses such as cancer and AIDS, and promotes an attitude of hope and research rather than despair. This is supported by a Prophetic saying: "Allah (Exalted be He) has not sent down any disease except that He has sent down its cure"
Qur'an's Universality and Infallibility
The timelessness of the Qur'an is evident in its ability to address and guide people in all eras, not just in the time of its immediate revelation. Its message is designed to appeal to the innate disposition (fıtrat) of human beings, who are naturally inclined to believe in God and seek the truth. Unlike philosophical treatises, which may contain contradictions, the Qur'an offers definitive and consistent truths because it comes from the Creator of all existence [11]. Its unrivalled eloquence is underlined by the challenge it poses to humanity to compose a text of similar depth - a challenge that remains unmet.
Gulen argues that the spiritual messages transmitted through prophets such as the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) possess a unique wisdom that enabled them to effortlessly solve complex problems that even geniuses struggle with.
This divine text serves as a map, guide and code of law for personal, family, social, economic, political and administrative life and addresses the entire society and its duties. It promotes universal values such as justice, freedom, equality, integrity, morality and compassion for all beings while explicitly forbidding injustice, polytheism (implied by monotheism), immorality and the violation of the rights of others. It emphasises the importance of responding to evil with goodness, a virtue for the patient [1, 2]. The Qur'an transforms the individual through education and promotes inner change as a prerequisite for societal transformation. The core message involves the harmony of intellect, spirit and body guided by divine wisdom to achieve true human potential.
In essence, Fethullah Gülen's extensive commentary and views, reflected in his books, present the Qur'an as a comprehensive blueprint for cosmic understanding that integrates scientific insights, moral principles and spiritual guidance to lead humanity toward both worldly and eternal happiness. His philosophy advocates education, dialogue and selfless service as the primary means of individual and societal transformation and explicitly distances itself from political power and sectarian divisions.
